Chain replacement advice (how to)
« on: August 20, 2006, 11:14:09 AM »
I would like to replace my chain this week, I know that the old one needs to be cut off.  Can I just use a bolt cutter to remove??  And is there any special tools needed to install the new one?  I see some chains have a rivet master link and some have just a clip on.  Thanks for the input before I get started.

 What ever way you want to get the chain off the bike with out hurting your bike works. But when you go to put on the new chain i use the clip style it's easier. You only need a pair of pliers and a small socket to squeeze the face on the link.

Clip on master links are nice, but rivet master are safer and stronger. I suggest buying a EK Chain!

do you need any special tools for the rivet style??  That is what I bought.  EK ZVX with a master rivet link.

To avoid taking off the plactic connect new chain to the old one with a master link to
pull it through the front sprocket.

yeah, a good chain tool is $100+

are you making major hp?  My suggestion is go with clip style, a good one is plenty strong.  There will be those who state they've broken chains just driving down the road etc....  Properly installed they just don't do that unless abused or under HUGE hp.

Actually, look at EK chains.  They now have a "screw type" masterlink which is the best of everything.  It's as easy as a clip to install, doesn't require fancy tools at all, and they rate it as strong as a rivet link.

As a note, I've broken about 5 chains.  Never had a masterlink fail of any kind.  I'd take a whole damn chain made from clip links, they haven't failed me yet

30 years of drag racing, never had a chain failure due to clip style master link.

Obvious answer, but just checking. Does the clip style have to have the open end facing the opposite to direction of travel? Is a 530HV-X suitable for the Busa with just normal riding and no abuse?

I've used clip type master links on my Turbo Busa without failure.  I did however safety wire it, and epoxy it.
