Clutch Spring Install Problem - Question
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:58:57 AM »
Everything was fine until putting HD springs in. Exotic Cycle slave support bracket on too. Pull clutch, whiney rattle on left side, shift into gear, bike dies. I don't even release clutch lever. I tried with all HD springs, and with half HD half stock. What's the culprit? Something break? Ideas? WTF?

when installing the slave support bracket.  did you have to remove the push rod?  and if you did, did you hit the clutch with no push rod inplace?

I did not have to remove the pushrod. I installed the slave support while the stock springs were in the clutch. Simply removed two allen bolts, placed support over top, replaced with two new longer allen bolts. That's it.

The bolts I replaced the stock spring bolts with are about 1/8 inch longer. They tighten all the way down, and look like the others. If they are a couple threads too long, could that be causing this issue?

I know they are longer. But would an extra 1-2 threads cause this issue? By possibly not allowing the clutch to disengage completely? Not sure...

No I dont.  But I thought all slave supports had a different clutch rod.  I could be wrong...

Okay, I found the culprit. When tightening down the springs, the seats snapped off, allowing the basket to free-float. What a POS... See pic. Where can I get one of these QUICK? Does a dealer carry them?

Called Schnitz, APE, Brocks, etc. No one has the damn bolts. So I bought a set of 40 lb springs from Schnitz. They came in and are definitely softer than the ones I have. So I now think that confirms they are the 60 lb springs. So I'll attempt to install the 40 lb springs when the new outer pressure disk comes... Always something... oh, and no Oceala...

Did you also install spacer washers above or below the springs? If you did the clutch springs coil bound and put HEAVY pressure on the hub. Check that the springsdo not coil bind when you install the new ones. Shorter bolts would cause the same condition. Just install a couple of springs opposite each other and try the clutch with the cover still removed you can look an tell if the springs are binding, then remove those and try a couple of others until you have verified all the spring do not bind. Then you can install and go for a ride.

Thanks. It looks even better with the fairings on it...

Well, I broke two of them... I think it was because I was trying to use 3 bolts that were slightly longer, by about 2-3 threads, because compressing the springs was impossible. So I bought the Schnitz 40 lb springs, I re-used the stock bolts, and all is good again...

I did not use any washers. I thought originally they coil bound. That's why I tried it for a second time being very careful, tightening and torquing properly. But it was not due to that. Thanks.
