"Netural light stays on"
« on: October 27, 2006, 08:55:59 AM »
The netural light stays on when the bike goes in to first and second gear. At times the light goes out, but comes back on as the rpm rises. Has anyone had this problem?

Bike: 03, stock motor w/ 17500 miles, muzzy exhust and remapped ECU.

If the problem is the gear position sensor you can pick up a brand new one for about $50.  Not sure how that is happening, pull the clutch basket, remove the sensor, and take a pic of the contacts for us to see.

There are 3 wires coming from the GPS sensor, red, black, and blue.  The blue wire is the neutral wire.  When this wires becomes ground the bike thinks it's in neutral.  Trace this wire and make sure it's not frayed anywhere or pinched really hard or something and grounding out.  If this was the case I would think it would work real intermittent though and not as you are describing.

Another possibility would be if somehow the neutral 1st and 2nd gear pins are connected together somehow, small piece of metal or something, but that sounds pretty odd also.  This is what the sensor looks like.

And if you are already removing the sensor, I can make you up a gear indicator if you are interested.

Thanks a lot, I took it out today and rode it for 170 miles, the problem corrected itself, I have no idea what was happening.  Thanks again, I saw the vid, I like the gear indicator lights, I may order one this winter.

I am having a very simliar problem. But, only in 4th gear when the engine is cold or cool. As I shift up or down thru the gears the neutral light will come back on in 4th gear.
After the engine warms up fully it never happens again.
It's  been doing this for about 2500 miles, (05 with 12500 miles on it now).

Suggestions ?

Would a moded GPS fix it?

If someone sent me a PM about this please post in the open or send me an e-mail. With only 5 posts (even though I've been a member since mid 05) I can't read my PM's.....

you might just be catching a false neutral when your shifting. might need to change your shifter position to get better leverage for your shifts.
and to saint peter i will tell another solider reporting sir ive served my time in hell..
