Yosh cams with 1397 setup (12:1 CR)
« on: November 25, 2006, 07:45:35 AM »
how does this setup sound? durable? ok will lower octane gas? maybe ard 92RON?

maybe a lower CR will help with easier hot cranking?
any expert opinions on this?

Not an expert but it will be a 190rwhp motor IF stock head and a bit more if ported.

12 to 1 works on 89 r/m(2) method which is like 94RON...  May also work on 92RON...

use 24 volt starting and you can run higher than 12 with 92

So how fast your starter spins determines which compression ratio you can use with certain octanes of fuel?

Or is this just a hard statement to decipher...

the 24 will not let it kick back or hard start when warm.
13.5:1 you can run on 92-93 octane

I was hoping that was what you were saying...

Mine runs on 93 with 13.5 MTC's and i use a 24V starting setup... :thumb:

dunno if i've gotten it correctly, but shouldn't a 13.5:1 require a higher octane fuel to prevent pre-detonation?

so am i right to say that it'll be quite safe to be running on ron92 for a 12:1 1397 setup?
my concern is that if i were to go 1397 and when it comes to pumping gas, i wouldn't risk blowing up the engine with lower octane gas as some stations may not have such high octane gas to begin with..

btw regarding the setup i posted again, does the yosh cam provide enough lift so that most of the potential of the 1397 maybe exploited..

also.. any advantages of using HD valves springs.. i'm currently looking at a set with 53lbs of seat pressure and coil bind of .520" from APE. will it be crucial for the set up?

Kaieiru   -   what country are you in?   You should be fine with 92RON.

The Yosh are about 1 step smaller than optimum - 395/378 Web cams would be optimum but the Yosh cams on a stock head will work fine and put you around 190rwhp with a decent pipe and tune.

The APE springs will work fine - mine still has stock springs in it.  Or Carpenter makes springs too...

hi gnd111, i'm from singapore, if you're familiar with where it is.. though we've got a wide selection of gas from RON92 to RON98 with additives...

but i do a fair bit of long distance riding to neighbouring countries.. so have to accomodate to the availability of the gas there..

i hoping to be able to juz get 200rwhp out of this setup reliably... if it's possibe without head porting and high compression... i'll be happy already.. :P

I ran Yosh cams in my 1397 for awhile and they worked pretty well...  Not the best choice for a larger motor, but they will work out OK...

No, the bike ran ~150mph with the Yosh cams and other head...  The Ward head/cams were worth another 5-6mph.

I thought it was a bit faster than my setup but i guess it was identical...

C/R is not going to make a siginificant difference.  I would recommend the JE pistons at 12.8 c/r...

what diff does it has then? as compared to a 12:1 CR.. i'm looking at less heat and better compatibility with lower octane gas..

Then get some 12-1 Wiseco pistons or whatever they lower c/r is with JE.

Call APE - they will get you setup right with pistons/block/ported head.

Going from 12 to 13 c/r might net 6rwhp...

I had that exact set up with a mild port job and had right about 200hp with a soft rear tire which eats hp on a dyno. I ran a best of 8.90 @ 160 and change on a near perfect day. Also, it would start in the hottest temps here (95 or so) on a single battery set-up. YTZ14s
