(Cam Chain) QUESTION ????
« on: October 09, 2003, 09:26:00 AM »
Guys I need to know if I F^cked up my cam timing, ( Here is the scenario ) Lossend up the cam chain tensioner but didn't  removed it, backed it out say 1/4 of and inch or so. With the engine off I spun the rear tire backwards about 1/2 a turn enough to force the piston to move slightly. Retorqued the cam chain  tensioner, started the bike up and it seem to ideal about 3 to 4 hundred rpms lower. Know I also added some gas stabilizer to my fuel tank.

My question, is it possible that I skipped a tooth and now my cam timing is off or is the stabilizer causing the fuel not to burn properly causing the rpms to drop?

Don't ask why I   loosened the cam chain  tensioner, that another story.

Hey Seb.  I use sta-bil gas stablizer in my bikes and other things every year.  I don't ever remember the idle dropping.  And if it did for sure not 300 to 400rpm...I don't even think my bike would idle if it dropped that much.  Hope that helps narrow your prob.

never turn it over without it being tight
just backing it out till it clicked would have been enough

Didn't turn it over, with the engine off about half a turn on the  rear wheel turning the wheel backwards on the rear stand.

Anyone else, trying to figure out if it's even possible giving this scenario, to mess up the cam timing

Play it safe, and just pull the valve cover off and take a look.

If you pull out the tensioner 1/4" -1/2" it will let the arm of the tensioner push out and then when you tighten it back up your cam chain will be over tight and it will snap shortly after riding a few miles, and say goodnight to your valves.
I would have someone take it all the way out and reset it put it back in right!
