Track day Tires ?
« on: October 14, 2003, 06:28:00 PM »
Question for the Track guys ( not drag) I will be doing my first track day with my 02 gsxr 1000 and would like to which tire do you like best between the sportec M1 or the dunlops. Most likely will not be doing a lot of these, track days and have not got a knee down either so, thanks for any help.

Dunlop 208GP (a) mediums, best bet.
Pirelli SuperCorsa Race Compound.
RennSport Race

those are the three best.

as for running street compound tires on the track, i wouldnt... but many do.

if your relatively fast, and your going over far, the cost for a good set of tires vs the cost of a lowside, the tires are cheaper. and one set of race tires generally last one day on the track anyway, so you put your streeters back on when your done.

i have a whole garage full of race slicks, let me know if you want a pair cheap, and ill send you a set or two. there is NO comparison.

Pirelli makes a good track street tire called Diablo Corsa you can use them in the street and track there is no problem with heat cycles.

I have tried Michelin Pilot RACE H2 and they both gripped superbly for 500 track miles AND lasted 1500 miles on my way home without exessive wear.

They are still on my ZX9R but the rear are kinda worn out by burnouts now
I dont know what I am talking about but I do know that I am right :)

If you are only going to be doing the occasional track day on a 1K and have never had a knee down I would suggest the Pilot Sports. They are a great street tire that can take the abuse of the track... lower your air pressure and take a couple warm up laps to make sure they are warm.. I would have to disagree that you need slicks because it sounds like (by you saying you have never had a knee down) you are not going race pace so why spend the money on RACE ONLY tires when you will not benefit from it... and then you will have to change back for the street. Just my $0.02  Good luck
