Auto-Shift WOW!!
« on: January 14, 2007, 06:27:15 PM »
 :D
I am still a little new to the whole web video stuff. I have attached a short video of my bike using the CYCLE-TEC Air shift controlled by my new gear indicator\shift light from BOOSTBYSMITH. This equipment is top quality and so are the people building it.
Basically plug and PLAY. I toggled the shift light to have the option of auto-shift or just the light. As you can see it works great.

Thanks Bikermike

The air shifter for starters.  Was reading about them and saw one from Stedman motorsports ,,,the whole set up including the  shiftlight /  gear indicator looks good.  In all honesty I like his video set up as well.

Only thing about that is I cna't do a gear indicator and a standard GPS Mod (1-2-3-4-5-5 Mod).  I have to wire the GPS as a TRE to do a gear indicator.

I can however do the launch / shift lights with autoshift (no gear indicator), like in this video www.boostbysmith.com/Videos/redlaunch1.wmv

Wow , I noticed that when he was rolling along in 3rd gear and he got on it that it down shifted to 2nd . That is way too cool . How Much for the entire setup ?

he downshifted it himself, the autoshift only upshifts.

There are 2 seperate systems there, Matt sells the Co2 setup, I sell the gear indicator / shift light.  I have more details on my website at www.boostbysmith.com

Or feel free to drop me a line at g.smith@linktestlab.com

step 1:  sell current setup

step 2: buy mine lol

auto-shift is just a switched signal at your shift rpm that you use to trip you air shifter.  not sure how dynas stuff works, but I can tell you how matt and mine works hehe

I was just reading up on the dyna shift minder, it sends a test signal to the bulb when you first power it up.  That will try and shift the bike if you have the air shifter armed and bottle pressure up.  That could be a pain at the track as you usually are sitting there with key off in the staging lanes, when you turn the key on it's going to go BAMM and smash the shifter.

The ones I do with auto-shift do not test the LED's on power up, only the launch light (if applicable) is flashed and that wouldn't affect anything.

The test signal could be a moot point by making sure the shift button needs held down before the shift relay is active. I'd reccomend this(AND an arming switch imo) no matter what on any system as there are too many mistakes in the pits, garages, dyno's etc. across the country by having uncontrolled systems. I run both an arming switch and a shift button that both need activated for my auto shift to work. My auto shift is then triggered by my tach output(non busa bike) and the cool thing for me on that bike is that my tach allows me to set each gear to a different triggering rpm(and record multiple runs inside the tach as well). This way my shifts can be set for each gear to retain max torque post shift for each gear. By arming the switch, launching(past any tire spin of course so it doesn't tirgger during tire spin), and then holding down the shift button the remainder of the run(or as wonted)... the tach can take over and perform the shifts at it's individual preset rpms. If I want to manually button shift, then I simply set the rpm limit lower and can trtigger it anytime I want. The above is just a safety thought... and we will certainly be obtaining our triggering components for the Busa from Greg when the time comes.

Very good point there. Damn, I guess I bought the Dyna unit too soon, I wish I had seen this thread before I bought it  :?

Actually on the Dyna instruction page, it says you can disable this feature by cutting the green loop on the back of the Shift Minder so I guess I could use it for the auto shifter :thumb: :thumb:

the dyna shift minder doesn't put out enough juice to relyably activate the shifter it might work if you run it through a relay

Using a relay is always the way to go, with the stuff i sell a relay must be used or you can fry the board as it's only designed to output up to 0.5 amps.

Just wondering... I went on their instruction page here: http://www.mpsracing.com/instructions/Dynatek/DSMS-4.pdf and on the 2nd page you can see that they hook up their brown/white wires from the Minder directly to the electric over air switching valve without using a relay.

I've tried it like that on a couple of bikes and it never worked right and I ain't taking chances missing a shift especially with spray

Greg....have you or anyone else tried your autoshift at the track??  I'm guessing tirespin could trip the shifter?  I've played with it with my dyna setup for a few monthes........I could get it to work great on the stand, but when ripping it on test rides it never shifted consistent everytime.  I'm interested in your set up......just curious on how it works when racing.

Yeah I realize that part but did it not shift properly because of setup or is it just a bad idea to use a Dyna shift minder to auto shift?

Too cold here for the track, were you using a relay like in the other posts?  maybe it wouldn't always grab the kill or it wasn't adjusted properly.  Seemed to be working good on Mike's bike there.

Tire spin will make it shift, if you have problems with tire spin often i woudn't suggest auto-shift.

Maybe I don't have enough pony's (295 HP at the rear wheel) to experience tire spin, or maybe I have to much ass not sure.
All I know is the auto-shift works great. My tach is off when it shows 10,000 the actual rpm's 9900 per the new Dyna 250I at Adams Performance (thanks Walter). I have the shift light to flash at actual 9900 which shows 10K on my tach and it seems to hit the same everytime.
Hope this helps as the weather is turning bad here so riding will have to hold for a while.

Advise, watch the weather and as it gets worse here in NE TN buy stock in Crown Royal he he!! :beechug:

Then the next email was how great everything looked, shit i was all worried LOL

You got an email from Me?

From another customer, had me all worried sounded like something was really wrong, just yanking my chain i guess LOL.  Was real happy with the everything looked, but I was super worried for about an hour before getting the next email LOL.

That's good for you, and good for your business. That was an hour well spent. Think of it as a brainstorming session of "What could go wrong?" :thumb:

trust me already did that LOL. Was looking back at picks of the power Y cable i made him making sure the power and ground weren't crossed even though i did that 5 times before it left LOL.
