Air Shifter Problem
« on: February 02, 2007, 08:42:40 AM »
My air shifter from first to second gear jumps into neutral instead of going into second gear. It shifts into all the other gears just fine. I had 120lbs of air in my swingarm. I use my swingarm as my air tank with an on board compressor. Could it be I need to adjust more kill time on my Ignition kill box or adjustment on  air shifter cylinder?

The Air Cylinder is mounted horizontally under the shifter peg. The Kill is set in the middle. When I get home I will look exactly what the kill box is set at. I just rode the bike up the block late last night to test the new stuff out, Air shifter, Kill box, SmithBusa Launch light, Gear indicator, Launch light and auto shift.

is the solenoid mounted on the cylinder
that is where you want it to be honest
it is one of the best places to have it mounted for speed of shift
the horizontal im not a fan of but to each his own
tale a pic if you can so we can see if there is something we can see wrong

the adjustment of the ram on the airshifter mounts under the peg is important. had a ton of problems with my first one. once it is right they fit great. who's mount do you have?

Vic..post a pic if Ya could??

With the solenoid right on the ram You will need the shortest kill time(all the way counterclockwise)..and if You have the clamp style thingy on the rod make sure its allowing You all the gears where its postioned..put the bike up on a rear stand and with the motor off, when rocking the rear wheel by hand(again with the motor off!!LOL)click it threw all the gears and see what happens...

Its usually somehting stupid, and I know this may sound dumb..make sure you have the wires from the kill box connected to the NON gray wires right at the coil sicks..

I am going to remount it like yours. I don't really care for the way it's mounted now. Pinky Isn't happy with it either, LOL. The kill box is definitely working. I tested the ignition kill box with the shift cylinder disconnected. It really kills the motor when I activate it, I think maybe too much. I have the kill box screw set in the middle. I am going to remount My shifter Thingy and turn the kill box screw all the way to the left and see what happens.

I have my digital camera at my shop. I will get it and take some pics and post it to show you how I have it set up. Thanks for the help guys. This sit is one heck of a support group  :thumb:.

Mr E- Racer, I adjusted the kill box and it shifts like a champ now. I rode all day using the Air Shifter. low rpm's and high rpm's it shifted great. Thanks  for the advice  :thumb:.

I've never heard of anyone having to decrease the kill time to stop from missing shifts...

I've got mixed feelings about having the cylinder mounted on a bracket below the footpeg.  I have mine set up that way, but I think they work better positioned vertically like in trbobusa's pic.

My Bad. I did  do a slight adjustment on the Cylinder. It was touching the frame just a tad. If I have any problems, I will definitely mount it Vertically. I tested the crap out of it all day and it shifted just fine  :thumb:.

The under the peg mounting brackets are sweet looking pieces for sure, adds a really clean finished look to everything  :thumb:  There's people who use them without issues, and people who use them that seem to complain about missing shifts quite regularly, as I had that problem on my '03 using one of these brackets.  Physics are physics, there just isn't as much leverage on the shifter as when the cylinder is mounted vertically.  Not to say these brackets don't work, but the condition of the trans is one factor that will impact the performance tremendously, as well as overall adjustment of entire system and components.  I would miss shifts once in awhile on my '03, the normal 2nd gear problem I was assuming, but after I switched to vertical mount missed shifts all but stopped.  Bottom line is if everything is setup just right and the trans is in good shape these brackets work.

And I KNOW IT SOUNDS DUMB..but the longer kill time the tranny unloads but for too long and is not able to shift the 1-2 shift..with the switching valve right on the ram very little kill is needed.................

Greg, the gear indicator works great. I didn't get a chance to test the Launch light and Auto shift yet. I will this week for sure.
