GSXR1000 vs TL1000R Whats the difference?
« on: November 28, 2003, 12:58:00 AM »
I have been offered a trade for a tl1000. GSXR1000 vs TL1000R Whats the difference?  I know the gsxr is more of a race bike but I was wondering what the main differences were.  HP,weight, riding position.  And what is your gut feeling for price for an almost stock 2001.  I have an oppertunity for a trade.  I didn't really want 1 but it is an option.  Thanks

already have a gsxr750 and busa. the trade is for a banshh I am selling.  I didn't know it was a v-twin.  I'd rather get a buell for a twin. The trade is worth $6800 for a 2001 tl, does that seem ok, whats the tl worth?  Thanks

I recently sold my TL.. Wish i still had it!! there is no way that it compares to the gxr1k even though i liked it better.. gxsr is faster lighter smaller.. but that twin motor in the TL is ALOT of fun.. if its yellow and black, get it!!

The Tl (S & R versions) is probably the most uncomfortable bike I've ever ridden.  The Gix 1000 is just as much a wheelie king, is smoother, and a better bike in every respect.  Lots easier to work on the Gixxer too.  Tls are a nightmare, IMO.

Buell, I wish you could talk to my friend Flyer about his Buell, he would ENLIGHTEN you a little!!

Let me tell you a few things about his so far, with no exaggeration included.

Flyer is about 45y/o, and has a white lightning.
SO far the huge shock that lays underneath has failed 3 times. Twice under warranty once out, and they won't stand behind it, $1200.00!!
The rear cylinder head ripped out of the frame, the front head blew a gasket.
Belts, I think he lost count!
He carries wire with him when he rides, because he cannot keep the exhaust from breaking off from the vibration!!
These are a few of the big things, and many more little things go wrong.
Mirrors are ornimental due to the vibration, you can't see anything in them!
Top speed, is about 135-40, and thats takin life in your own hands with a V-twin from the early 1900's under your nuts!!

GO ahead, buy a Buell, find out for yourself!!
Then try and sell it again, cause he has been trying for almost 2 years! RESALE IS ZIP!

TL, well reliabilty is a given.
Smooth decent power with a shorter wheelbase then the GSXR1.
Power is about 40 horse less, weight is about 50lbs more.
TL sits like the Busa, not cramped.
Has alot of torque, that makes up for alot of its weight.
It Sounds like a harley on steroids with a set of Two Brothers pipes bolted on!
Last year of production, so better get one if you want it!
Follow the crowd and go no where.

Just sold my 2001 TLR so I could get the Busa . The Tlr was an awesome bike , torque monster and wheelie machine are an understatement . Great ride and very comfortable .

The TL1000 is a slug! Don't go for it! You've been warned
The TL is a slug? Compared to a Busa everything is a slug, but damn Dwight, the TL will hit 180 mph stock, and wheelies are so easy that you almost have to try NOT to do them!!
Its a fun bike for what it costs, horse power is rated at 133, but torque is Very high, so its not wimpy by any means, add a power commander and good pipes and its a highly motivational bike!

Two things that make it worth owning, one is the wheelbase, its short as hell, the second is sound, if you wanna bike that sounds as good as it looks, this is the one!

Dwight sometimes I wonder about you!

I loved my tiller!  I'm not sure I would trade a 1k for one though.  That's up to you.  My tiller would not approach 180 mph.  174 mph indicated max'd out.

Well then my Busa speedo is off that far then, because Randor rode his next to my Busa, each of us were indicating 180!!!
I was extremely surprised to see it myself.
We didn't have a GPS with us, but I swear we both indicated 180!
Randor get on this post, straighten these guys out!!!

Yes, your Busa's speedo is off that far too.  Nearly all of the Japanese bike have speedos that read very high.

When I topped mine out with the TRE off, the needle said 198 ~ 199 at an actual 186 mph.

My speedo read 180. I'm sure it was off, but not more than 5 MHP or so. All I had on that bike was some Yosh cans. If I would have added a PC, full exhaust system, and an air box mod, I'm sure it would exceed 180 MPH. I really miss that bike, but IMHO I would go with the GSXR1000. Not because of the comfort though, that TL was comfy as hell (Gel seat). It's pretty comparable to the Gixxer comfort-wise and way better than an SV.

I tried to tell-em Randor, but they didn't beleive me!!
I don't know why the TL ever got a bad rep, because its a sweet bike!
Don't knock it, its a hell of alot better to sit on then the RC51!

That clears everything up.  Now we have two people that both saw 180 on their incorrect speedometers.
