Post by: Revalot # 1 on November 25, 2020, 07:56:25 AM
Hello guys long time no see, If I was planning on turbo mods, what would you do gen 1 or gen 2 ? I know the gen two has better ecm to flash,  but better block on gen 1 ?

Gen 1 also has better rods. We did Gen1 motor with Gen 2 crank and all Gen 2 wiring etc to use the gen 2 ecu. Gen 2 in take cam so cam pin is correct.Gen 1 rotor with one tooth ground off.

Up to 280 ish hp a gen 1 is pretty friendly with just a spacer and an FMU.
If you’re going for more than that and are doing rods, secondary injectors, springs then you may as well go for a gen 2. Easier fueling and a thicker output shaft. If you’re going for a shi@ ton of ho the get a gen one and have it bored and re-nikasiled.

While a gen1 cylinder is stronger, unless you are running over 550hp, and at that dragracing it, I wouldn't sweat having a gen2.

Cylinder heads are basically the same with the gen2 having an advantage if left stock without porting. Either one should have some stiffer valve springs installed of trying to make any power in the area that warrants rod replacement. I personally would put springs in for any turbo application.

Stock studs can work for up to about 500-550hp as well. Anything serious should have larger studs installed.

HD output on the transmission is recommended for any as well.

This is what I'm wanting to do, I'm 6'4 265(I plan on trying to dropping 20 pounds maybe more) But I want  around or close to 300 hp, dependable and maybe a little more later. I want a H2 but honestly I just love the hayabusa platform had one for 12 years. I like my ZX14R but never felt the way about it like my hayabusa,  like a chevy vs a ford the hayabusa is just better.  Looking at a gen one that's totally stock and low mileage,  I think the gen 1 looks better than gen 2 ! I believe that a gen 3 is coming,  but I need more power  !

If that's what you want, and you are disciplined enough to keep it at that, I'd like at a gen2, and still pit pistons and rods in it, or at least rods with a spacer to lower compression a bit.

Simple ecu flash with 3 bar map, upgraded fuel pump, perhaps a lockup clutch, and you'd be in your way.

With a gen1 you'd have to add additional Injectors with a secondary controller...or you could use something like a MaxxEcu Mini as a standalone or just injector controller. Many more practical options today than there were in say 2003 ;-)

Or...go all out and  build a 450hp+ street machine with a full standalone you only live once.

I'm kind of glad I dont ride anymore...I'd probably have 600hp with stock wheelbase.

If you are going to keep.ot at a mild HP level, you will likely have more than $1200 more in the gen1 to fuel not properly.

You could use an FMU with larger injectors to fuel it as has been done many times, but that is a pretty poor option with the availability of MAP based fueling in my opinion.

Out of commission  ! As of Saturday a bull dog ran out in the road to cut me off while on my ZX14R,  I was probably at 50 mph or so the 90 pound dog a tried to cut me off, I've been riding for 35years or more. About 3 feet out before impact I pur my 13 left alpine star boot out to kick his *** and not go down,  well it worked but twisted my ankle out 45 degrees,  broke my fibula/smaller bone in leg close to ankle,  surgery next Tuesday a small plate and some screws  ! I didn't lay the bike down or even scratch it. I'm pissed ! The dog is fine for now !
