07 cutting out at random. ONLY 5000 miles.
« on: September 23, 2011, 06:23:24 PM »
So, I've been reading through the threads and it seems that this is a somewhat prevelant problem, but everyone who reports having the issue seems to have 20k+ miles on their ride.

I fired her up cold the other day and needed to get going so I didn't give it a whole lot of time to warm up. I started reving the throttle to expidite the process and at one point (inadvertantly), I actually hit the rev limiter. Since that day, the bike now just dies at random, and it feels like it's lost power. Did I fuck up the fuel pump? Fowl the plugs. Could it be running (seemingly) ok but actually be down a cylinder? Oh, and just to establish the set up, it's running a full yoshimura 4 to 1 exhaust with a pc3 power commander and a K&N air filter. A simple set up which, other than being a bit "poppy" when I roll off the throttle, has served me well up until now. I don't want to start dismantling the entire fuel system on a bike with only 5k miles if I don't have to. Any thoughts guys?

It was an accident. I wasn't trying to show off or any stupid shit like that. I was just in a big hurry and needed the engine to warm up. I don't treat my bike like shit, if that's what you're implying.

...and reving the piss out of it like that is not something I regularly practice.

The dying at random could be the side stand switch or Tip over switch. Hitting the limiter likely didn't hurt anything, although I would advise against revving a completely cold engine to over 10,000 rpm :-)
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

your better off just riding easy instead of free revving it...i would check tos and side stand like the above said

Not a good way to warm up a engine at the rev limiter,I am pretty sure that is why you have a fast idle!!

Ok, this may sound naive, but where is the tip over switch and how can I determine if that is the culprit? I've never even heard of this. I was aware of the side stand switch, and I will check on that. The cut outs are more like "flash" outs though. They are consistently associated with a quick close of the throttle follow by or in conjunction with deceleration. However, the speed of deceleration doesn't seem to be a factor.

Oh, and I don't have a fast idle. I don't know where you got that but I never mentioned that.

Would I rev an engine over 10,000 if it was warmed up? Absolutely. I do it very routinely on only a slightly warm engine while dragracing.

yea, thats under a load, free acceleration under no load is not good, thats when shit comes apart

I used to think the same thing, however I have never seen anything be damaged from free revving or even from bouncing a bike off of a rev limiter. Used to race with a guy that would always start his zx12, and just free rev the crap out of, do his burnout on the limiter, etc. Never once have I seen an engine break while someone was doing it. I'm not saying there is any reason to just free rev an engine and bounce it off the limiter, just have never seen anything break because of it.

LOL, ok. Now that we've determined that the free rev probably wasn't the culprit and I know where the tip over switch is....are there any other suggestions as to what could be causing this?

I have had some isolated issues with the main relay located with the fuse box. I believe it was the cause of my bike spontaneously cutting out at the track.

What's your idle rpm at?
Seen a few do this with a low idle, like sub 750rpm.

Ok, it was the idle. It was idling around 750rpms. I must have just happend so slowly that I hadn't really noticed. Brought it up to 1100rpms and all is well. So, there ya go. Check that idle speed. Easy pizy. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I always find the help I'm looking for here.

That is like brushing your teeth with sand.  Not good for the motor. IMO.
