Valve keepers
« on: January 16, 2018, 05:00:56 PM »
Just saw this tool, anyone use it or something similar, doing keepers by hand is time consuming-- at least for me-

Looks interesting, but a bit cumbersome. May work better if a smaller version was available.
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

They work ok on stock valve springs, but very had to use on HD springs unless it has some weight behind it and still tuff

I have a big heavy keeper tool and a smaller K&L style. The bigger one which has some weight behind it won't  work on a 1000 because its to big for the tappet hole. The smaller one I use for stock spring  applications  and use a regular spring compressor  tool for installing HD springs. They have air assited ones that you can buy because it can bother your forarms and wrist when you do alot of them.

Jim, I made a tool similar to the ebay one in the post above... I put the keepers in the retainer and the retainer on the spring.  With the valve stem straight up, I compress the spring and 99 times out of 100 the keepers fall in place .... I unscrew it and move to the next one.
Yes I have a head fixture that makes holding the valve vertical easy...
