What Else To Do With Big Bird????
« on: March 01, 2006, 06:57:37 PM »
I've got a HMF BB on the way right now :D.  I need to get an idea of what else I should do along with the exhaust in the way of supporting mods.....IE: Small box mod, Filter, PAIR mod, etc??????  I also need to know what Power Commander to go with.  I was going to go with the III USB, but I was told that with that one you can't adjust ignition timing, or that you need an aditional tool to do so????? :?  I will also need to know where I can get a map to tide me over until I have the bike dyno tuned this spring.  I looked on Powercommander.com and only found one map.  It was submitted in 02 and it was for the BB and a K&N only!
By the way, the bike is a stock 05.
Thanks Fellas!!!

Go with the USB- don't worry about timing. Get a custom map ASAP or I'm sure someone on this board has one. I'd stil get a (good)custom map no matter what.

Small Box Bod, BMC Race Filter, PAIR Mod and maybe a TRE.  If you end up with a PC3R I'll send you my map for the setup listed above   :thumb:

Awesome!  Thank You.  I'll definately keep that in mind.  Is what I'm reading (SEARCHING) about the BMC filter being no better than the stock paper true???

Absolutely not.  The BMC "Race" filter is different then the regular BMC.  Is it worth the extra $20???

Where's the best place to get that filter.  I also need a place to buy the PAIR Block-Offs.
Thanks for all your help.

Hit up Charles at Street&Track, he's a member here.  Tell him I sent you.

It was dyno tuned, 168hp 101tq using a Shinko tire, said to lose anywhere up to 5hp on the dyno because they're soft.  So, I think 170hp is safe to say.  I now have a LM1 data logger and will be making real world custom street and strip maps from the data.
As far as times go, I wasn't very impressed with my times after I got the bike dyno tuned.  Best before was 9.61, best after dyno tune was 9.52, both with 146mph.  That's one of the reasons that led me to purchase the data logger, I can't stand paying money for someone to 1/2'ass a job that could be better!  The bike runs great, but I'll be doing A LOT of tuning this year at the strip and the street to optimize the maps.

I bought a BB a while back, but the bike's been in the shop for a while and haven't had a chance to put it on.  I was looking at the pipe the other day and tried putting it together, off the bike just to see what it looked like complete, and I had a bitch of a time getting the pipe attached to the header/midpipe.  It seemed as if it was too big.  Anyone else have this problem?
just cause it fits doesn't mean it looks right.

It definitely takes patience, but for it not to go together off the bike, I would look for out of round pipes or interference of some kind.  Remember, patience is a virtue!

Also:
#1 USE THE FOIL TAPE ON THE PLASTICS!!!!!!!
#2 I had to elongate the mounting holes in the belley-wing ever so slightly to make it work

I took a look at the pipe again last night and I have what may sound like a dumb question, but when connecting the mid-pipe to the header pipe, do the slits on the end of the midpipe go in to the header pipe or should the midpipe fit on the outside of the header pipe???  Both end seems to be the exact same size   Any suggestions?
just cause it fits doesn't mean it looks right.

From my exhaust experience, if the pipe is notched or has slits, it goes on the outside of the the other pipe.  If yours is really snug, you can gently wedge something in the slit to open it up slightly.  Another suggestion is to put the inside pipe in the freezer, and warm up the outside pipe, it should slide right on.
